10 Tips for Identifying Quality & Genuine Rilakkuma Plushies!

Disclaimer: these tips are specific to the smaller ~22 cm collectible plushies (like this, this, and this) sold in stores and events, not the UFO catchers, licensed goods, larger sizes, or extra-company collaborations (like Lawson plushies). These guidelines may be more applicable to recent releases and may not hold true for older ones. I am not affiliated with San-X; this list was compiled strictly from personal observation and experience.

Wishlist – 10th Anniversary Zodiac Series! (ACQUIRED!)

To celebrate Rilakkuma’s 10th anniversary next year, San-X will release the Zodiac Series in January 2013. Each of the plushies represents one of 12 astrological signs of the (Western tropical) Zodiac.

To be honest, I’m kind of lost on the official name: Horoscope? Astrology? Constellation? I’ve seen this series referred to as so many different things in so many different languages (Google translate just made me more confused). I guess the naming seems ambiguous to me because San-X also releases the annual Chinese Zodiac plushies, too.

10th Anniversary Zodiac Series

I might want to order the Taurus, the Cancer, and the Scorpio in the future. However, I’m looking forward the entire release because they each have such great details – like the Gemini holding two Korilakkumas and Sagittarius’s quiver. Libra is even weighing dango against a star! That must be some pretty heavy dango. Also, there’s a nice (and appropriate) star motif, and each one has has their astrological sign embroidered in gold. I’d take them all if I could!

I wonder if it’s a coincidence that this series is being released during the Chinese year of the snake? In sidereal astrology, Ophiuchus/Serpentarius (the Serpent Bearer) is often considered the 13th symbol! And look: next year’s annual lunar new year’s release is a serpent-bearing Rilakkuma!

Marine Series Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

My brother was home for the weekend, so I snapped a few shots of his Rilakkuma plushies! They are from the Marine Series, which was released in May 2012. Because San-X did not release a Kiiroitori for this series, this is actually the complete set!

Aww! So cute together!

Their hats are so well done!

“daradara since 2003” – this means that they have been lazy since their birth in 2003!

It’s so nice to see the full set! I have to admit that I am personally biased towards Rilakkuma, so all of my plushies are Rilakkuma only, but having the matching set is so sweet! They’re sized perfectly, so that when they are standing together, it looks like they are holding hands!

Wishlist – Sapporo 1st Anniversary Series! (ACQUIRED!)

This mint chocolate chip ice cream Rilakkuma was released in September 2012 to celebrate the Sapporo Rilakkuma Store’s 1st anniversary – even the tag is ice cream shaped! Breathtaking details as always, down to the tiny chocolate sprinkles all over the hood and the little mint leaves at the top. The back of the hood also has a celebration message (Happy 1st Birthday! Sapporo.) embroidered in gold! Luckily, I know a bunch of places selling them, but for now I’m going to restrain myself from splurging since I’ve been on a Rilakkuma shopping spree for the past few months already.

Sapporo Rilakkuma Store 1st Anniversary - event announcement

Happy birthday, Sapporo branch!

In general, all of the special store anniversary releases in 2012 were super cute, from Kichijoji’s 2nd Anniversary strawberry cake plushies to Umeda’s 4th anniversary chocolate pudding plushies. I would love to have any of them, but I’ve got my eye out for the Sapporo version because he’s a combination of my favorite ice cream flavor and my favorite Rilakkuma clothing item, the poncho!

Announced: Let’s Play With Rabbits Series!

San-X has announced that they will be releasing a new Rilakkuma series called “Let’s Play With Rabbits!” in December 2012:

Let's Play With Bunnies - Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma

They look like Energizer bunnies! Looks like Rilakkuma even gets a little front pocket! The new rabbit ears aren’t too much longer than their existing ears, so it kinda seems like they’re just wearing fuzzy pink pajamas. The animal costumes are always super cute, but when have we seen Rilakkuma as a bunny before?

Year of the Rabbit Series 2011

Bunnies Series Rilakkuma with removable suit released December 2010. Also, this series has a strawberry motif, and this Rilakkuma has a little embroidered strawberry on his butt hahaha.

Bunnies Series 2007 - Korilakkuma

Korilakkuma has worn another pink bunny costume before back in 2007!

So many bunnies! No complaints here though – these new rabbit plushies look super soft, and San-X always seems to continually improve in quality! The newest edition looks a little fluffier than the previous versions. It’ll be lovely to see these new bunny plushies when they hit the market!

Chicken Series Rilakkuma!

This Rilakkuma was a gift to my sister for Thanksgiving! He is her first themed Rilakkuma (she already has a medium-sized bear like the one I use for Rilakkuma Lifestyle photos). He comes from the same Chicken/Egg Series as the Caravan version I posted earlier, which came out this past October. He also came in the same decorated package as my Hamburger Rilakkuma! This Chicken Rilakkuma has some pretty adorable details:

Chicken suit Rilakkuma - full body shot

He looks so cozy! And he has a front pocket like a kangaroo.

Chicken suit Rilakkuma - lining detail

The inside of his chicken suit is lined with a soft red checkered gingham. This fabric is also used to pad the feet of the suit.

Chicken suit Rilakkuma - tag detail

Fabric tag illustration: looks like Rilakkuma is breaking out of an egg!

Chicken Rilakkuma - removable suit

The costume is so soft and well-made! His chicken suit is actually fully removable, but doing so is tantamount to dressing/undressing a cat so I think that may be more trouble than it’s worth.

Hamburger Series Rilakkuma!

I received this Hamburger Series Rilakkuma plushie before I started this blog, but I never got a chance to share so here he is now!

Hamburger + Chicken suit Rilakkumas - package and gifts

Decorated package came with Hello Kitty cream puff squishy, little packets of furikake decorated with anime, and Rilakkuma stationary.

Hamburger Rilakkuma - full body shot

I guess he’s technically a cheeseburger.

Hamburger Rilakkuma - ketchup bottle detail

Rilakkuma tomato ketchup! I’m always in awe of their details.

He’s so cute – I’m glad to add him to my personal collection! This bear came out in February 2012, as a limited edition corollary plushie set of the Happy Picnic Series:

Chicken Series Rilakkuma – Caravan Edition!

My newest Rilakkuma plushie arrived in the mail!

Caravan Chicken Rilakkuma - package and gifts

Package also included 3 cute egg-themed Rilakkuma stickers, a Rilakkuma store bag with seal, and a Rilakkuma Christmas 2012 commemorative bag! Yay! If it isn’t already evident from Rilakkuma Lifestyle, I’m a sucker for Rilakkuma+food themes.

Caravan Chicken Rilakkuma - full body shot

Aww, he’s painted an egg!

Caravan Chicken Rilakkuma - plaid lining detail

Cute plaid lining detail on the poncho. Ponchos are my favorite clothing item for Rilakkuma plushies!

Caravan Chicken Rilakkuma - hood detail

Close-up – I like how his little ears poke out!

He’s from the current Rilakkuma Chicken/Egg Series, which was first released this past October. However, this plushie in particular is part of the Autumn 2012 Caravan. The seasonal caravan is a series of special events held by San-X: they bring out the (larger than) life-sized characters in themed outfits and have special products like this plushie that aren’t regularly available in stores. To compare, the version sold in stores wears a full (removable) chicken suit instead of a poncho:

Caravan versus Normal Chicken Rilakkuma comparison

I purchased one of the full chicken suit Rilakkuma plushies a while back, and will be giving him to my sister as a Thanksgiving gift since she’s been asking for months – he’ll have his own post, too!

Ordering Rilakkuma!

As a Floridian, buying Rilakkuma plushies in-store is almost impossible without also buying a plane ticket. Even though there are stores that are official domestic carriers around the US, they’re predominantly located on the West Coast and pockets in the Northeast. To make matters worse, I have no knowledge of the Japanese language beyond “watashi wa kuma desu” (私はクマです) so browsing Japanese sites is out of the question for me (especially since many do not ship internationally). Bummer.

Luckily, through the magic of the internet, there are a number of ways to get genuine San-X Rilakkuma plushies if you live away from a Rilakkuma storefront – here are a few:

The online store of Rilakkuma carriers in your country
A quick look at the official San-X shop list and you can access the locations and websites of stores that carry licensed San-X products. In the US: Maido, Tamaya, Toyko Japanese Lifestyle, and Kawaii Gifts are all licensed San-X carriers that operate online stores.

Usually the shipping cost will be relatively cheaper/faster since it is domestic, and there’s no customs hoopla. Of course, many times their stock is limited or out of season, which may not be great if you’re looking for plushies or limited edition items. However, this can also work in your favor if you’re lucky: stocking out-of-season items means you might have another chance at catching plushies that are no longer sold in official Rilakkuma stores. In general, these online stores are very reliable if you’re simply browsing for Rilakkuma items.

I have a US-centric experience, so elsewhere, YMMV. You can try the other licensed sellers outside of your country who are willing to ship internationally, too, but they may charge a higher shipping fee, and it may take a while for your purchases to reach you. I haven’t used modeS4u, an officially listed store based in Hong Kong, but the pricing looks pretty reasonable and the pictures show you the actual product (versus just the catalogue picture), which is an encouragingly good business practice – may be worth a shot.

Rilakkuma browses eBay

Auction websites
This is my preferred method of ordering Rilakkuma plushies mainly because of the direct communication options that are inconvenient in a lot of other online stores and since I’m really picky (and can only read English). eBay can be a really good resource if you have a specific item in mind; however, the number of fakes listed is staggering. I estimate that on any given day with a simple “Rilakkuma” search, the amount of fakes outnumber genuine products at least 50:1. It’s disheartening, but it’s definitely possible to navigate through, as long as you can differentiate the genuine products from the fakes (more on this in a later post). Shipping costs can be kind of all over the place depending on the seller, but the communication platform on eBay is pretty solid.

Tenso

Tenso is a forwarding service that is recommended by the San-X Net Shop. Since the Net Shop doesn’t ship internationally themselves, Tenso will give you a Japanese address (a warehouse), and they’ll forward your San-X things from there! The Net Shop does not stock every Rilakkuma item, but you can access hundreds of products, AND sometimes there are Net Shop exclusives! I highly recommend Tenso for Rilakkuma purchases, but since the Net Shop is almost entirely in Japanese, it might be rough to navigate. I use Google Chrome for their auto-translate function – even though the translation isn’t perfect, it’s been good enough to place and order for me.

Other sellers with independent sites
There are a few independent sellers on different corners of the internet who use different platforms to sell Rilakkuma things. Like eBay, some of them are collectors that are selling their stock for whatever reason, some are stores that cater specifically to collectors, and others may be Japanese/kawaii interest sites. The reason I place this kind of seller in its own category because this platform presents a different buying experience – it’s pretty much a grab bag. There are some online stores with notoriously bad reputations, but sadly there isn’t a comprehensive blacklist to definitively know who’s a bad guy yet. Without the feedback system and buyer protection policies of larger auction sites, using this method can be a gamble, but there is a ton of diversity out there – with a discerning eye and careful online shopping practices, you could easily find that Rilakkuma you were looking for!

Networking & foreign agencies
Some websites, bloggers, and sellers offer consulting services to help you find what you’re looking for. This could mean putting you in touch with a seller in their network that already has the plushie, or a trustworthy agent based in Japan who can directly access actual Rilakkuma stores or Japanese auctions that only ship domestically and/or require a Japanese card/account. Japanese auctions/stores have SUCH a huge assortment of genuine Rilakkuma stuff; it is incredible.

Or, it can be an agent who can help you navigate through Taobao (a Chinese online marketplace) since that site uses Alipay which requires a Chinese card/account – this site has about as many (if not more) fakes as eBay though. In general, these agencies may be able to save you a lot of money in international shipping. They will charge a service fee, but this can be really helpful for someone who doesn’t know Japanese/Chinese but needs access to the extended Asian market. Certainly not necessary, but could be more convenient.

Even though sorting out all the fakes can be tedious, finding great sellers and rare products can be very rewarding. Many times, a reliable seller can also help you track down other Rilakkuma items in the future! However, if you’re like me, this can be a blessing or a curse because I end up spending more and more money on Rilakkuma haha.

Ultimately, searching for Rilakkumas can be quite the adventure, but with a little elbow grease (keyboard grease?), a whole world of Rilakkuma can be accessible right at your fingertips!

Meet the Rilakkuma!

This is the Rilakkuma plushie seen in every one of the Rilakkuma Lifestyle photos (with the exception of user submissions). He’s the star!

Rilakkuma Lifestyle Rilakkuma

He’s my first Rilakkuma plushie – he was a gift from my parents when I graduated from Duke this past spring. I take him with me wherever I can.

With the help of my sister, my parents purchased him from a Hawaiian seller. At the time, I didn’t really know too much about Rilakkuma, just a few gifs I saw on tumblr. Look how far we’ve come!
